More than chat - Wat kan AI betekenen voor ontwerpers

Target audience

The target audience for the specialist course would be PHD applicants and master students in architecture
with an interest in computer sciences or alternatively PHD applicants in computer sciences with an interest in the use of
generative AI as a design tool. We would like to structure the specialist course in 3 horizontal studio’s consisting each of
1 PHD applicant and 3 or 4 master students.

Abstract

Our ambition with the specialist course is to research what the role of AI within the design process of architects can be.
The social risks posed by AI pose are central to current academic debate, and particularly the impact on creativity,
authenticity and authorship of text-generating models such as Chat GPT.
Without ignoring these dangers and important societal questions, we would like to broaden the current debate by shining
a light on the possibilities of AI as a tool for the architect.

Objectives

During the course of the summer school, we will research how to ethically integrate AI in a design process. We will teach
the students how to train an AI-model themselves on a curated database and research how prompting and parameters
within an AI model can influence results. The three horizontal ‘ateliers’ will work on exercises respectively centered around
Authorship, Authenticity and Reference, key topics around the use artificial intelligence within a design process.
