Target audience
Participants should be familiar with general psychopathology and especially schizophrenia spectrum disorders, as well as with the phenomenological perspective on psychopathology.

Abstract
The specialist course aims to provide a training in the Examination of Anomalous World Experience (EAWE), an interview instrument grounded in phenomenological psychopathology, which aims to elicit a discussion about a person’s lived experience in the world. The EAWE can be used in qualitative research on psychosis spectrum disorders, and in clinical work with these patients. The workshop will provide an intensive training in using this instrument for research purposes.
Topic and theme
The course will provide a theoretical foundation of the six key dimensions included in the EAWE, namely, a person’s experience of:
- Space and objects,
- Time and events,
- Other persons,
- Language,
- Atmosphere,
- Existential orientation,
as well as a live demonstration of the interview techniques during the course. There will also be room for discussing the research projects of PhD candidates who will use this instrument in their studies.
Objectives
At the end of the course, the participant is expected to
- Have a good knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings of the EAWE;
- Insight in which situations the EAWE can be used;
- Know the methodological qualities of the EAWE;
- Be trained in practically implementing and conducting the EAWE with participants.
Lecturers
Prof. Elizabeth Silker Pienkos (Clarkson University, Department of Psychology): Prof. Pienkos obtained her PhD at Rutgers University (USA) in 2014 concerning a qualitative investigation of anomalous world experiences in schizophrenia. Since then, she has led multiple research projects focused on self- and world experience in psychosis spectrum disorder and other mental disorders. She took a position as Assistant Professor at the University of Hartford, and later as Assistant Professor of Psychology at Clarkson University. Since 2014, Prof. Pienkos has published 37 articles and has been invited internationally to give talks (e.g., Oxford University). She provides workshops internationally on the EAWE, that she co-first-authored with Prof. Louis Sass
