The role of physical activity, movement and sports in physical and mental health

Target group

Members of the Doctoral School of Life Sciences and Medicine. Members of the Doctoral School of Social and Behavioural Sciences are also admitted to the course. 

Abstract

This specialist course will bring together scientists with a focus on innovative research in the area of physical activity and sports towards the improvement of human health. World renowned speakers from physical activity, exercise and movement science will share their expertise on a variety of topics linked to activity for health. Challenges and opportunities for future research and policy in health-related physical activity and sports will be discussed.

Part I – March 1-2, 2022: Activity for health (f-tales) (2-day)

  • Topic: This meeting is organized by the Flanders TrAining network LiFe Sciences (f-Tales), a joint training initiative of the 5 Flemish universities.
    The main theme of this meeting is “Activity for health”. During this meeting, the following topics will be covered: exercise and brain health, e- and mHealth, healthy sports and healthy environments, and exercise is medicine. More info can be found at https://ftales.be/ 
  • Timing: Tuesday, March 1 (8h.30-17h30) & Wednesday, March 2 (8h30-16h00)
  • Venue: Provinciaal Administratief Centrum (PAC), Woodrow Wilsonplein 2, 9000 Gent

Part II – March 30, 2022: Walking interventions (dr. Tomas Vetrovsky)

  • Topic: dr. Vetrovsky will give a lecture on the improvement of health in clinical populations (primary care, heart failure, type 2 diabetes) by means of walking interventions.
  • Timing: 13h00-14h00
  • Venue: Auditorium Marc Maes, Department of Movement and Sport Sciences, Campus Dunant, Watersportlaan 2, 9000 Gent 

Part III – April 26, 2022 : Mental health (VUB-UGent meeting)

  • Topic: The main theme of this day is the influence of physical activity and sports on mental health
  • Timing: 8h30-16h00
  • Venue: Department of Movement and Sport Sciences, Campus Dunant, Watersportlaan 2, 9000 Gent (location details will follow)
