Advanced knowledge of English. The language itself should not form a hurdle when presenting.

Objective

This course improves your presentation skills at conferences and scientific seminars. Participants learn how to hold a well-structured presentation which will be tailored to and leave an impression on its target audience.

Content

This semester course compiles various elements of the conference skills modules (except for Academic Posters).
The following topics are discussed:

  • How should you adapt your language to the medium, register and audience?
  • How can you pitch your research project?
  • How can you properly introduce and conclude your talk?
  • Which techniques can you use to structure the body of your presentation?
  • How can slides properly complement your presentation?
  • How can you overcome difficulties you may encounter?
  • How can you manage voice control and body language?
  • What should you pay attention to during a Q & A?

Topics

  • Observe: authentic footage is used to focus on separate skills and features
  • Analyze: practical guidelines for effective presenting are drawn up and discussed
  • Create: new insights are put to practice in the context of the participants' own research multiple times throughout the course. Both the teacher and peers will give feedback to these presentation tasks.

Evaluation criteria (doctoral training programme)

The participants will hold a presentation on their research subject for an educated lay audience towards the end of the course. This course counts as 1 transferable skills training in the cluster Communication skills.
