Cluster
Communication Skills
Target group
Members of the Doctoral Schools
Level
Participants should have an advanced knowledge of English so the language will not form a hurdle within this workshop. They should already have some experience with designing academic slides as they will have to bring own material to the second class.
Objective
The students learn how to make appealing slides and well-structured slideshows that make academic presentations more dynamic and the take-home message more memorable.
Content
Authentic examples from a broad range of disciplines, including the participants' own material, will be used to discuss various aspects of slide design, such as:
- how to edit your content to fit this visual medium
- how to support your main message
- how to find the right balance between text and images
- which colour scheme, titles, animations and figures to use
- how to properly structure a slideshow
Analysis and comparison of examples will lead to deducing practical guidelines that will be implemented in productive exercises. Participants will receive both peer and teacher feedback to their slides.
This course does not offer an initiation to the use of PowerPoint or other programs, but gives insights into the practical implementation of the participants' (basic) knowledge of the software they use.
Placement test: No
