Turning research data into powerful visuals

Cluster

Communication skills

Target group

Members of the Doctoral Schools, no previous knowledge required

Aim

  • Identifying a relevant message in a (research related) dataset.
  • Adapting and optimising this message for visual communication to a specific target group.
  • Designing graphics that meet specific challenges within scientific research: representing uncertainty, conveying objectivity.
  • Designing graphics that fit the specific form of scientific communication: oral and poster presentations, scientific articles, popular scientific articles, blogs and social media posts, doctoral thesis.
  • Knowledge of the different basic types of graphs (bar chart, line chart, pie chart and scatter diagram) and when to use them or not.
  • Knowledge of some lesser known chart types, and be able to evaluate when to use or not to use them for a specific dataset.
  • Being able to format tables clearly and attractively.
  • Knowledge of the workflow and techniques for preparing a dataset for visualization, and for converting it to a graph.
  • Being able to add elements to make a graph as clear and effective as possible: use of colours, icons, data labels and legends.
  • Formulating an appropriate title and caption to support the message of the graphic.
  • Knowledge about the possibilities of making a graphic interactive, and which tools can be used for this.

Programme

By the end of this workshop you will have covered 4 themes:

  1. An introduction to data visualization
  2. Graphical representation of data
  3. Design and production of data visualization
  4. Visualization of scientific research

Day 1: Graphical representation of data

  • Part I: An introduction to data visualization (theme 1)
  • Part II: Graphical representation of data (theme 2)

Day 2: Designing and creating graphs

  • Part III: Producing and designing data visuals (theme 3)

Day 3: Group discussion and case studies

  • Part IV: Visualizing your research (theme 4)
