Kristiaan Borret (1966) graduated as a civil engineer-architect (K.U.Leuven) and Master in Urbanism (UPC, Barcelona). 

In his professional career, he is regularly alternating between theory and practice, between design and policy, between architecture and urbanism. 

At Ghent University he participated in GUST (Ghent Urban Studies Team), an interdisciplinary research project on contemporary transformations of the city and the urban public space. In Projectteam Stadsontwerp (prof. Marcel Smets, KULeuven), Labo S (Ghent University) and Technum, he contributed to various urban planning, public space and infrastructure projects in Belgium, Netherlands and France. From 2006 to 2014 Kristiaan Borret was the bouwmeester of Antwerp (Belgium). Since 2005 he is visiting professor urban design at Ghent University. 

Kristiaan Borret publishes regularly in journals and other publications include Homeward: Contemporary Architecture in Flanders (1998), The Urban Condition. Space, Community, and Self in the Contemporary Metropolis (1999), Flanders Architectural Yearbook 98-99 (2000), 00-01 (2002), 08-09 (2010) and Yearbook Urban and Spatial Planning Flanders 2002-2005 (2006). 

He is a board member of the Flemish Architecture institute (VAi) and of the Belgian architectural review A+. He is also member of the International Scientific Committee of Europan. 

In 2013 Kristiaan Borret was awarded the Flemish Culture Award for Architecture 2012-2013.
