Biography

Marc Delghust (1985) graduated as a ‘master in engineering: architecture’ (UGent, 2008, magna cum laude) with a master thesis on the optimization of lowered ceilings for night-ventilated offices. During his studies, he did internships at the architecture and engineering office Bureau Bouwtechniek (Antwerp, 2005-2006) and familiarised himself with the field of restoration and renovation at Universitá degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata (Rome, 2006-2007). From 2008 to 2009, he worked as an architect at Alexis Versele Architectenvennootschap (Ghent).

Since 2008, he has been working at the Building Physics Group of Ghent University, doing research mainly on retrofit cavity-wall insulation, thermal bridges, energy use in dwellings and user behaviour. In 2010, he received a joined PhD-fellowship from the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) and the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO). He obtained his PhD in 2015 with a dissertation entitled ‘Improving the predictive power of simplified residential space heating demand models: a field data and model driven study’.

As a post-doctoral assistant at UGent, he continues his research on the gap between real and theoretical energy use in buildings, focussing on pragmatic modelling techniques and the use of field monitoring data, used in design and occupancy phases of buildings. While participating to several national and international research projects, he also closely works together with private companies and local authorities and takes up educational tasks, including the supervision of master and PhD theses.
