Reading club session on "Coaching”

In October 2022, our design.nexus (design education pillar) team organised an open discussion session on the subject of ‘Coaching’. Inspired by 3 state-of-the-art research of colleagues around the world, we discussed types and emerging models of feedback in different fields. We shared views on:

  1. What type is the feedback you offer mostly during the Concept development phase in a (design) process: Divergent or Convergent?
  2. What do you think of the 'Correcting-Errors' type of feedback?'
  3. What are the ‘right’ constraints to set for your students, or to be given as a student?

Participants to the session included international master’s students from the Educational Sciences and a representative of the Budascoop (city of Kortrijk) performance arts sector (with an active feedback culture for work-in-progress performances). We engaged with hands-on activities, and shared practices of feedback, tutoring and critiquing from education and the dance scene. The multidisciplinary stance of the session gave voice to the culturally and sectorially different practices of coaching, yet, with overlapping concerns and limitations, as well as, creative methods and opportunities in the instructor-student exchange moment.

Our next (open to all) Reading Club session will be organised in early 2023, possibly in a hybrid manner. More information on the discussion topic and date will be announced soon. Stay tuned!
