InduFlexControl: Control algorithms for flexibility in power-to-X and industrial processes

InduFlexControl aims to unlock and control the flexibility of energy-intensive processes and power-to-X  technologies to optimally reduce CO2 in a way that is suited to the overall industrial and energy eco-system.

In line with the Moonshot initiative, the fundamental research challenge is the design of radically new techniques. By integrating model predictive control (MPC) and deep learning, the constraints imposed by industrial process characteristics, energy market design and the power/energy network configuration can be considered while applying industrial flex.

These techniques will also allow us to combine the best of both worlds, meaning model-based approaches for robustness and model-free/data-driven techniques to deal with the uncertainty and complex nature of energy-intensive processes. Ultimately, InduFlexControl aims to disrupt the current industrial conception by fostering the design for flexibility of energy-intensive processes.

InduFlexControl is a sprint strategic basic research project (sprint-cSBO) within the Flanders Industry Innovation Moonshot initiative MOT4. This initiative specifically supports research into sustainable energy solutions. With an initial duration of 18 months, it will be carried out as a collaboration between Ghent University (UGent) and EnergyVille partners VITO (Flemish Institute for Technological Research) and KU Leuven. The spearhead cluster for the Flemish chemical and plastics industry, Catalisti, is putting this initiative into practice with the close cooperation of Flux50, the Flemish cluster for the smart energy industry.

Period: 01/03/2020 – 31/08/2021
Budget: 1.500.000 €
Partners: KU Leuven, VITO, UGent
