Better PET scanners thanks to Medisip

(06-05-2021) Thanks to researchers from the Medisip research group PET scanners can be improved.

The research by Milan Decuyper and Mariele Stockhoff within the Medisip group of Stefaan Vandenberghe and Roel Van Holen showed that neural networks can determine the interaction position in a monolithic PET detector with a clearly better spatial resolution than the current methods. In time, this can lead to clinical PET scanners with a system resolution that reaches the physical limit of 2 mm and an improved detection of small tumors. The work was first published in Physics in Medicine and Biology, one of the best scientific journals in this field, and then listed in the magazine Physics world.
