(22-09-2020) The virtual ECML-PKDD conference was very successful with more than 1000 participants.

The European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (ECML-PKDD) took place from the 14nd to the 18nd of September 2020. ECML-PKDD is the premier European machine learning and data mining conference and builds upon over 18 years of successful events and conferences held across Europe. It is a highly selective scientific event (with paper acceptance rates around 20%) featuring the best research in the field.

The conference was due to take place in Ghent, Belgium, with several core organizers based in ELIS-IDLab, Ghent University: the General Chair (Tijl De Bie), one of the Program Chairs (Jefrey Lijffijt), one of the Demonstrations Track Chairs (Sofie Van Hoecke) and the entire AIDA research team from ELIS-IDLab. Also Willem Waegeman from the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering from Ghent University was part of the core team of organizers as Workshop & Tutorial co-Chair.

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic initial plans to organize the conference in Ghent had to be adjusted: it was now fully online, featuring well over 400 pre-recorded presentations (using slideslive) combined with live zoom meetings and webinars, all integrated with the Whova virtual conference platform. It features a 5-day around-the-clock program suitable to all time zones, with continuously 6 parallel presentation tracks, 30 workshops and tutorials, 5 plenary keynote presentations by top-notch international speakers, and a lively Industry Track (including also the AI4Growth Industrial AI Day). The conference has attracted more than 1000 international participants.
