Project PIT: Investigating the Mechanisms, Initiation, and Growth of PITting Corrosion and Its Impact on the Fatigue Lifetime of Offshore/Maritime Structural Steels
Offshore/maritime structural steels, when exposed to harsh corrosive environments are susceptible to uniform and localized corrosion; the last one is often referred to as pitting corrosion. Pitting corrosion leads to the formation of randomly distributed, tiny, and localized dimples on the material surface, progressively degrading the steel and ultimately contributing to corrosion-fatigue. Maritime and offshore asset owners are consistently challenged by uncertainties in structural integrity caused by corrosion, fatigue, and their combined effects.
With the ambition of deepening the understanding of the initiation, evolution, and growth of pitting corrosion in maritime and offshore steels, a two-year collaborative project titled ‘PIT’ has been launched, starting in January 2025, through a partnership between Sirris, KU Leuven, and the Antwerp Maritime Academy.
