CMM with cMACS in Nature Catalysis

(17-11-2020) The innovative catalyst system developed by the CMM could instigate a greener producation of fine chemicals.

The CMM (Center for Molecular Modeling, Ghent University), together with cMACS at KULeuven and other international partners developed and characterized a novel catalyst system that could lead to greener production of fine chemicals. The results are published in Nature Catalysis.

The catalyst was created by combining molecular palladium, a transition-metal known for its high activity in organic reactions, with zeolites, which are microporous minerals with interesting adsorption and catalytic properties. The resulting “palladium-zeolite” could catalyse the formation of biaryls, which are structural motifs often found in fine chemicals, with unprecedented selectivity. In addition, the reaction proceeds with minimal formation of by-products and no need for preliminary steps in the procedure, unlike traditional processes of biaryl formation. This promisingly demonstrates that greener processes for fine chemicals production could be realised in the near future based on this catalytic concept.
