Small nuclear reactors, great future?

(03-03-2021) Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates argues that small modular nuclear power plants are indispensable for curbing global warming. Can they also be developed in our country?

Our colleague Joannes Laveyne, researcher at the Electrical Energy Laboratory (Department of Electromechanical, Systems and Metal Engineering), says the following about the small modular reactors (SMRs) in the newspaper De Tijd:

 'The operation of nuclear power plants has until now always been subsidised directly or indirectly, for example through the tolerance of monopolies. SMRs should be profitable without the government financially stimulating their operation'.

 In the long term, I see opportunities mainly for large-scale consumers of electricity, such as the steel or petrochemical industries'.
