High-speed random-number generator uses vacuum fluctuations as a source of entropy

(23-03-2023) Truly random numbers are a key component for many applications. Here we use the randomness that is present in the vacuum state as a source of entropy to implement a high-speed integrated quantum random-number generator.

In this work we demonstrate a generator using integrated photonic and electronic devices which is able to reach speeds much higher than achieved before, and uses an advanced security framework. Due to the significant advancements in speed and the integrated nature of this device, this publication also got a dedicated news article in the popular science journal 'New Scientist'.
