Vacancy: Post-doctoral researcher in natural language processing & machine learning

We offer the opportunity to pursue research as well as gain research project management skills in an international environment (with over 17 nationalities at IDLab, part of imec and Ghent University), a friendly working environment, and with a competitive salary at Ghent University. The successful candidate will expand her/his expertise in NLP and related fields, be actively involved in project funding acquisition through proposal definition, writing and submission, and take a lead in managing such (sub)projects at the level of the IDLab research group, both with locally based and international partners. The candidate will also take up mentoring and (co-)supervision of PhD students and MSc theses. In all of this, the postdoc will benefit from overall support and supervision by academic staff. Access to extensive computing facilities (including GPUs) will be provided.

As an applicant for the offered position, you must have obtained a PhD degree in computer science, on a research topic in the fields of natural language processing and/or machine learning.

In addition, a successful candidate should have:

  • A strong academic research track record, with publications in major Natural Language Processing and/or Machine Learning conferences.
  • A keen interest in defining, managing, and participating in research projects in collaboration with industry and/or academia (experience in that direction is a plus).
  • Past experience in preparing and writing project proposals (e.g., EU Horizon 2020) is a strong plus.
  • Strong social skills, interest in supervising junior researchers (i.e., PhD and MSc student supervision).

About IDLab at Ghent University

IDLab is a core research group of imec with research activities embedded in Ghent University and University of Antwerp. IDLab performs applied research and development of high speed and densely deployed wireless Internet technologies and data science. IDLab’s research areas cover machine learning and data mining; semantic intelligence; distributed intelligence for IoT; cloud and big data infrastructures; multimedia coding and delivery; wireless and fixed networking; electromagnetics, RF and high-speed circuits and systems. The IDLab team counts about 300 members (40 professors, 50 postdocs, 200 researchers, 15 support staff).

Your role in our team

You will join the “text to knowledge” team in IDLab at Ghent University, which applies machine learning and data mining techniques to try and make sense of information embedded in natural text documents (or collections thereof). As a post-doctoral researcher in this field of natural language processing (NLP), you will take part in the supervision of PhD students, and get the chance to pursue your own research goals in line with the team’s interests.

However, there will be a strong emphasis on managing and participating in new/ongoing research projects, both in a national and international context, as well as bilateral applied projects with industry. There is a clear interest in custom machine learning and text mining applications, especially from upcoming big data oriented companies, and we want to strengthen our team with a senior researcher in natural language processing and machine learning, to be able to meet that demand.
