An international conference on the latest theoretical, historical, methodological, and computational developments in the study of early cinema.

An international conference on the latest theoretical, historical, methodological, and computational developments in the study of early cinema with as keynotes: Prof. A. Gaudreault (U Montreal) and Prof. Ch. Keil (U Toronto), to be held at KASKcinema, Ghent, Belgium, November 9-10, 2018.
Topics: Whereas the first decade of early cinema is usually discussed in terms of attractions the era’s second decade is most often understood as the transitional period during which narrative becomes the dominant. The conference seeks to shed new light on some older debates as well as to explore novel avenues in the study of early cinema including the role of the audiences’ imaginative engagement, the historical understanding of fiction/non-fiction distinction, the relevance of truth and falsehood, the sensuous and dreamlike qualities of the era’s films, and the growing importance of digital materials and methods among other topics.
