Good practices related to the prevention, detection and handling of image manipulation in scientific publishing
Authors, journals and institutions are faced with problems related to improper handling of images in scientific publications.Examples are selective modification and/or duplication of images, which might lead to correction or in severe cases may even warrant retraction of publications.
Although many journals have now implemented strict guidelines on what is acceptable/unacceptable, improper laboratory and clinical image processing is still observed with a high frequency, both during the review phase, but unfortunately also after publication. Furthermore, post-publication issues are brought to light by both anonymous and named whistleblowers, this either directly by contacting the authors/journals/institution or alternatively by online discussion fora, with the expectation towards journals and institutions to handle these allegations and correct the literature.
Goal is to inform researchers from a laboratory or clinical setting with discussion from the viewpoint of several stakeholders
