Fernando J. Bazan (University of Minnesota, USA) will give a general lecture on cytokines and how we should reshape our views on them.

Cytokine systems are entering a new phase where we've moved from discovery and deorphanization of new molecules and receptors, to a deeper and more nuanced structural exploration of recognition and signaling mechanisms for hallmark complexes. This will help decipher the molecular logic of unwieldy cytokine/receptor families, and reshape our views of these molecules as tunable effector networks of the immune response. In addition, cytokines have emerged as active testbeds for novel protein design and engineering methods, that promise to retool cytokine therapeutics––so the question bears asking again!
