Being passionate isn’t just about knowing – it’s also about feeling. And this evening we bring our best storytellers on stage that all have a thing for bees (which they can’t hide).

After a short intro on 100 years of passion at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering by Dean Marc Van Meirvenne, the evening kicks off with ‘Professor Guy Smagghe in the land of insects’ where he climbs into a painting and meets several fascinating insects.

The love story continues with Wouter Deprez, beekeeper himself and known to us all for his intelligent, provocative, profound, and good, solid gags. He gives us a performance, specially written for this occasion.

And last but not least, Professor Dave Goulson takes the floor, who amazes us with his knowledge about bees and the wildlife that lives right under our noses, in our gardens and parks, between the gaps in the pavement, and in the soil beneath our feet. Professor Goulson will receive an honorary doctorate from Ghent University on March 20th.

The presenter of the evening is Britt Van Marsenille, Godmother of the Week of the Bee and beekeeper herself.

We will start sharply at 19:00 at our campus!

4 bee lovers on stage

Wouter Deprez

Wouter Deprez is a comedian, storyteller, author and columnist known from television, theatre and books such as 'De rechtvaardige rechters' and 'Bloemen, bijen en borstbollen'.

Wouter is a devoted family man with a heart for nature. He brings these two passions together in his own garden where he teaches his children about biodiversity and beekeeping.

Dave Goulson

Dave Goulson is Professor of Biology at the University of Sussex.

Specializing in the ecology and conservation of insects, particularly bumblebees, Goulson is the author of 300 scientific articles, several books, including ‘A Sting in the Tale’ about bumblebees.

In 2006 he founded the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, a charity that aims to reverse the decline in the bumblebee population. David was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the BBC Wildlife Magazine listed him as the eighth most influential person in conservation.

Guy Smagghe

Guy Smagghe is professor at Ghent University and a world expert in insect research.

His research focuses on insect physiology, toxicology, molecular biology, applied ecology and mechanisms underlying the evolutionary success of insects against challenges in the environment, all with the aim for a more sustainable environment-friendly crop production. Guy is listed as a highly cited researcher in the Web of Science.

Britt Van Marsenille

Britt Van Marsenille is a radio and television presenter and on her way to write a children's book about bees.

As the godmother of the week of the bee, she dedicates herself to promoting the importance of bees and flowers. Britt is also a qualified beekeeper herself and passionate about spreading the message that solitary bees, bumblebees and honeybees need our help for more food and nesting space, even in the city!
