The challenges of epidemiological research in rare diseases

This lecture is part of the Interdisciplinary Medical & Health Seminars.

Guest speaker: Prof. Franz Schaefer (Chief of the Pediatric Nephrology Division at Heidelberg University Hospital)

In this lecture Prof. Franz Schaefer guides you through the challenges of epidemiological research in rare diseases based on his extensive experience in different consortia. He sheds a light on the GDPR challenges encountered in registries, and mostly he points out the interesting opportunities and impact that epidemiological research in rare diseases can bring. With his unique track record in clinical and epidemiological research, and his special interest in rare diseases, he is perfectly placed as the Chair of the Coordinators of the European Reference Networks (ERN), an international network of specialists helping patients with rare and complex diseases getting an accurate diagnosis or proper treatment.
