Online debate on Belarus and the EU, with experts from UGent, Kent, Minsk Dialogue and Amnesty International

Ever since the Belarusian presidential elections of 9 August, in which Alexander Lukashenko was reelected to a sixth term, reports of mass electoral irregularities have prompted an outbreak of public protests that have continued to this day. Opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya has claimed victory in the elections and is a co-organiser of the protests, while numerous countries such as the UK and Canada have refused to accept the election result. The EU has done the same, but can it do more? Should the EU take a more proactive position in Belarus, mediating a transfer of power, or keep up the policy of sanctions on Belarusian officials deemed responsible for electoral fraud and violence against protestors? And what with Russia's position in Belarus?
Panel:
Fabienne Bossuyt (Ghent University),
Elena Korosteleva (Kent University),
Yauheni Preiherman (Minsk Dialogue), and
Nadzeya Husakouskaya (Amnesty International).
