There is opportunity in every crisis. A talk on new insights gained in acute respiratory distress syndrome in the COVID-19 pandemic by Bart Lambrecht

The COVID-19 crisis has been a major threat for many patients, our healthcare system, and our research activities. Despite this, it has also brought many good things. In hospitals, there was a reduction in bureaucracy, there was a collaborative and can-do spirit, that resonates even today.

Healthcare professionals had a renewed feeling of competence, autonomy and relatedness, key factors for intrinsic motivation in their job. Also, in the research setting, we have had many opportunities. We have contributed strongly to the diagnostic testing in the first wave of the epidemic, and in collaboration with many labs, have performed single cell RNA sequencing on the lung cells of COVID-19 patients, that have led to the scientific underpinnings of three clinical trials of immune intervention, that in total enrolled more than 500 patients.

Finally, we also generated new mouse strains that can now be used to understand the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV2 infection.
