What does it mean to ‘decolonize’ a curriculum of sociology in which colonialism has been unrecognised?
Gurminder K Bhambra is a Professor of Postcolonial and Decolonial Studies in the Department of International Relations, University of Sussex. She is President of the British Sociological Association (2022-25).
Delivering the yearly public lecture of the Ghent University Sociology Department, Prof Bhambra will focus on discussing what does it mean to ‘decolonize’ a curriculum of sociology in which colonialism has been unrecognised. Critically analyzing modern social theory, including the writings of Marx, Weber, Durkheim and Du Bois, she shows what is needed is not simply to add colonialism to sociology’s repertoire of topics, but to show how that repertoire must change and the concepts and methodologies with which it is associated be transformed.
