An update on the Nagoya Protocol and Access & Benefit Sharing legislation, with emphasis on legal and practical implications for researchers.

Researchers who want to access and use biological material must consider new rules since 2014. Almost all countries in the world endorsed the Convention on Biological Diversity, and many became a party to the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization. Researchers must comply with all related and binding legislation on access to genetic (biological) resources and the sharing of benefits thereof. This is the core of ABS, or Access & Benefit Sharing. In the info session we will look at the background and different parts of the Nagoya Protocol. You can expect a thorough clarification on the often complex rules related to the use of genetic resources with plenty of time to ask questions about the implications for your own research. The session will be given by Filip Colson of the VLIR, the Flemish Interuniversity Council. Participation by Ghent University personnel is free, but registration is obligatory.
