On 4 April 2023, Finland joined NATO as a direct response to Russia’s war against Ukraine. Also, Sweden has applied for NATO membership.

At the same time, the war led to the most severe changes to international cooperation in the Arctic since the end of the Cold War. In this presentation, a number of questions related to the international governance of the Arctic and the Russian war against Ukraine will be explored against the background of the super-topic dominating Arctic-related discourses, climate change, and its connections to security, Russia and the ongoing war.

Stefan KirchnerStefan Kirchner is Research Professor of Arctic Law and the Coordinator of the Arctic Governance Research Group at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland. He is Adjunct Professor of Fundamental and Human Rights at the Law Faculty of the same university and has taught international law at universities in Ukraine, Lithuania, Greenland, Italy, and Germany. He is a member of the bar in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, where he works on the intersection of environmental and business law.

This presentation is given only in his private capacity and does not reflect the views of any organization, corporation or institution.

Moderator: Berk Vindevogel, PhD researcher, Ghent Institute for International and European Studies.
