Study costs and study financing

At enrolment, you will be charged the tuition fee, amongst other costs for books and materials. If you are a refugee or you have the subsidiary protection status, you might be eligible for the reduced tuition fee and you can apply for a scholarship of the Flemish government.

Tuition fees

At enrolment you pay a tuition fee. The amount depends on the course programme type (bachelor, master, …), the amount of credits taken, your nationality (EEA or non-EEA) and your residential status.

How much is the standard tuition fee?

The amount of the standard tuition fee is 961,9 € (for a bachelor, master, linking or preparatory course of 60 credits, AY 2021-22).

Who is entitled to a reduced tuition fee?

As a non-EEA student you are entitled to a reduced tuition fee of 113,2 € (AY 2021-22) when you have a low income and you meet one of the following criteria:

  • You have a permanent residential status in Belgium
  • You have an official refugee status or the ‘subsidiary protection’ status
  • You are a victim of human trafficking
  • You have had a legal residential status in Belgium for at least 12 months (this does not apply to asylum seekers or international visum students)
  • You have a residential status due to family reunion (in this case more specific requirements are applicable)

! In order to be entitled for the reduced tuition fee you need to apply for a scholarship of the Flemish government: www.studietoelagen.be or contact the Social Service: www.ugent.be/socialedienst

! Asylum seekers are not entitled to a reduced tuition fee and will be charged the standard tuition fee (961,9 € for 60 credits).

Can refugees and asylum seekers be charged a higher tuition fee as for non-EEA students?

No. For master programmes non-EEA students will be charged a higher tuition fee (1861,9 € or 5743,9 €). But these tuition fees do not apply to you when you have a residential status that makes you eligible for the reduced tuition fee as mentioned above. This does either apply to you when you are an asylum seeker, in this case you pay the standard tuition fee (961,9 € for 60 credits).
