Energy transition plan 2020-2030

Climate change calls for drastic measures. The EU has committed itself, in implementation of the Paris climate agreement, to be carbon neutral by 2050. This means an almost complete transition to renewable energy, a halt to further use of fossil fuels and a very significant reduction in energy demand. Several decisions to be taken now must already take account of this transition, especially in terms of infrastructure that will be in use for decades. Read here the energy plan 2020-2030.

Goals

Ghent University commits to be climate neutral by 2050 and makes this ambition specific for the next 10 years, with the following objectives:

  • Ghent University reduces the total CO2 emissions related to building heating and electricity supply by an average of 1.5% per year;
  • energy consumption is reduced annually through more efficient use of space and energy;
  • Ghent University builds and renovates from now on fossil free.

Strategic framework

To achieve the above goals, an ambitious action plan is needed. This contains study work, investment measures and measures to achieve behavioral and systemic change. It is built around 2 pillars:

  • energy efficiency
  • investments in green energy
