Prof. Jóhanna Barðdal is awarded a residential fellowship at Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study

(03-05-2019) Prof. Jóhanna Barðdal has been selected for a stay at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS-KNAW).

Research project

The NIAS Fellowship allows Jóhanna to work on a specific research project for a period of five months in the spring of the academic year 2019/20. Prof. Barðdal joined UGent in the fall 2013, bringing with her a prestigious ERC grant to carry out research on the evolution of case, argument structure and alignment in Indo-European.
At NIAS Jóhanna will be working on subject properties of potential non-nominative subjects in Latin and Ancient Greek, as a part of a larger book project on the syntactic behavior of non-nominative subjects in the early Indo-European languages. The project challenges the standard view that potential non-nominative subjects in the early Indo-European languages are syntactic objects and hence that non-nominative subjects in the modern Indo-European languages are an innovation.

Through this fellowship, Jóhanna will become part of a carefully selected community of about sixty scholars, artists and writers. Jóhanna was awarded the fellowship through an external review process on the basis of the quality and innovative value of the research proposal. The success rate of NIAS fellowships is about ten percent.
