Dare to Think: Ghent University people on their science hero

(25-10-2017) Many people from Ghent University have a personal icon, a science hero they look up to, who inspires and urges them to explore new paths and directions. Five of them share their science heroes in the newest edition of Dare to Think.

You can also read all about the Internet of Things, in which a smart environment is created by incorporating sensors and actuators into all aspects of our lives.

“The Internet of Things is much more than just a hype,” say Professor Piet Demeester, Ann Ackaert and Wouter Haerick in Dare to Think. “IoT will have a huge impact on our lives - and already does. If you had predicted ten years ago that almost every car would have a radar system, no one would have believed you.”

In the brand-new Ghent University Homelab at the Zwijnaarde Science Park, users can test out various IoT applications. Ghent University, UA and VUB have also launched a post-graduate Internet of Things study programme this academic year, an absolute necessity, as the industry is in dire need of candidates with the right expertise. The programme is also supported by such companies as Orange, Atlas Copco, Proximus, Telenet, Agfa-Gevaert, Nokia, Microsoft and the Cronos Group.

In the 'made@ugent' section, alumna Sofie Vanrafelghem (Master of Communication Sciences) shares her thoughts as the first woman in our country to dedicate all of her time and efforts to becoming a beer sommelier.

Sofie Vanrafelghem in Dare to Think: “My love of beer was born during my graduate year at Ghent University when I tasted my first craft beer: a Westmalle Trappist Tripel. I had never tasted anything like it before. I grew up with a broad culinary repertoire, but it did not include beer. I’ve now convinced my parents of the beauty of beer. They now have just as many bottles of beer as wine in their cellar. One of my greatest accomplishments (laughs).”

In the ‘UThinks’ section, we fast forward to our Global Campus in Korea and bombard Professor Stephen Depuydt (Department of Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics) with questions. His favourite Korean dish? “Dakgalbi, which is spicy marinated chicken fillet with stewed vegetables, and Jjimdak, stewed chicken with vegetables and glass noodles. I’ve learned to eat with chopsticks in Korea - it’s slower and healthier.”
