University for You: debate on the societal role of the university

(24-09-2017) Major societal challenges – like sustainability, diversity, ‘glocalisation’, and workable work – demand that the university reinvents itself and explores how science can serve society and how society can become involved in science.

Ghent University now knows well what it’s good at, but is now asking the question, “What is it good for?”.

Come join the debate during the University for You (U4U) event, together with Herman Van Rompuy, Eric Swingedouw, Bea Cantillon, Jan Rothmans, and others.

Chatbox study

In order to fill in the debate a bit, the results of the ‘chatbox study’, a bottom-up, shared, co-creation process between scientist and citizens, will be presented.

For ten months, a ‘chatbox in a caravan’ drove around the city, finding various places to settle down and throw open its doors to allow as diverse a group of participants as possible to share their opinions on the role of the university in society.

The low-threshold study in an inviting setting produced reliable, valid data that is strong, transparent, and inclusive.

It is an open dialogue that sheds some light on the expectations, perceptions, and priorities that are important within society.
