(11-03-2021) Professor Patrick Van Damme becomes the second dean of the Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences at the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague.

A professor in tropical agronomy, Van Damme taught several classes on ethnobotany at the Institute of Tropics and Subtropics at the Czech University of Life Sciences (CZU). He was later asked to take up a professor position at the institute.

Shortly after, Van Damme was involved in the transformation of the Institute of Tropics and Subtropics into the Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences at the Czech University of Life Sciences.

"I thought Prague was an interesting entry point into this part of Europe and I enjoyed my stays here. Later on, the idea was introduced to me whether I would like to invest myself more in the internationalisation efforts of the faculty, and why not go for the position of dean."

He is the first dean ever as a foreign national in the history of the CZU.

As the new dean, Professor Van Damme plans to consolidate the faculty's international ranking and further develop its international mandate. He also promises to bring in a shift towards more emphasis on contribution to society as an alternative to the current focus on the number of published peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals.

We wish Professor Van Damme all the best in his new position!
