Metadata of research data

Capturing information on the data itself, the so-called "metadata", right from the start of the project is important : who collected the data, where, when, what kind of data, subjects, etc. If you want to share your data with others, or reuse it later on, you would do well to record this information in a standardized way.

In order to reuse the data one might need to describe the data more extensively in addition to standard metadata: to elucidate the correlation between data sets, to describe the method and circumstances under which the data were collected or to add the notebook or code book. It can also be necessary to archive the software used. All these documents are archived with the data.
