Project description

The EU is one of the world's leading producers and exporters of agricultural products thanks to its varied climate, fertile soil, and the technical skills of its farmers. The EU financially supports its farmers, and encourages sustainable and eco-friendly practices. Since 2014, the EU has invested in a large number of agriculture-based research, innovation, coordination and support actions to improve knowledge flows. The EU-funded Eureka project is building on this by creating an open source e-platform called the FarmBook. Inspired by Facebook, this two-sided platform will connect farmers, foresters, advisors, scientists and policymakers, among others, with 21 multi-actors from 16 member states and 48 organisations.  The open-source FarmBook will present knowledge that is easily searchable.

Objectives

The main objective of EUREKA is to co-create a stronger EU wide agricultural knowledge base by (I) analysing the variety of different outputs, activities and dissemination strategies of all Horizon 2020 projects based on the multi-actor approach, (II) reinforcing an active and engaged multi-actor (MA) project community, and (III) selecting the most relevant and high impact agricultural MA project knowledge for the rural and scientific community to be accessible in a standards-based, easily searchable and open source database. This knowledge repository , which we call the FarmBook, will ensure the longevity and better sharing of the produced MA end-user material and research outputs to enhance the much wider, cross-sectoral and long-term use, including by the various Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKISs).

  • Map and evaluate activities and outcomes of all (120-150) MA projects* in WP1 for their potential impact on end users, in particular farmers, foresters and their advisors, or other intermediaries, such as applied scientists;
  • Learn from all these MA projects to identify do’s and don’ts in terms of data generation, data storage in knowledge repositories, multi-actor approach, communication, dissemination and exploitation (C, D & E) that contribute to generate impact.
  • Get to know the end user and define the most important profile(s) or ‘archetypes’ of end-user groups, including their data needs, barriers, preferred channels and behaviours.
  • Explore the dynamic sustainability of project outputs and the FarmBook through the implementation of an EU wide agricultural knowledge base connecting outputs of MA projects with each other and to other existing databases and National Rural Networks (NRNs) in regional and national AKISs.
  • Communicate and disseminate the EUREKA outcomes to the farming community, the agricultural research community and the public at large by reinforcing an active and engaged MA project community, leveraging the existing MA project resources and connecting to existing C & D channels, such as those of farmer organisations, advisory organisations at national and European level and NRNs.
