Introduction

Electron and X-ray microscopy Community for structural and chemical Imaging Techniques on Earth materials. 15 beneficiaries from 9 countries for a total of 18 facilities. Coordinator: Prof. V. Cnudde (UU-UGent)- 3 years (1 May 2021-31 April 2024)

Project description

Integrate X-ray and electron microscopy techniques applied to earth materials and to make those accessible for new and existing user to unite our interdisciplinary community through our passion for microscopy. Within EXCITE we will provide transnational access to 21 individual electron and 19 X-ray microscopes and bring correlative microscopy of earth materials a quantum-leap forward via joint research activities. This will help us to tackle the earth-science challenges of the 21st century.

Objectives

These are the objectives of EXCITE:

  • Provide access to state-of-the-art facilities and expertise in the field of electron and X-ray microscopy applied to earth materials.
  • Develop integrated X-ray and electron microscopy techniques aimed at earth-materials research.
  • Build a community of highly qualified earth scientists that are users or potential users of electron and X-ray microscopy techniques.

Role of Ghent University

UGent, with Prof. Cnudde as coordinator is active in all aspects within this project. UGent specifically is leader of WP7, where we tackle the complexity of earth materials and understanding of various properties by multi-dimensional and multi-scale characterization. More specifically they will be responsible for the report on IT infrastructure platforms for correlative multi-scale, multidimensional imaging of earth materials and work on uniting X-ray and electron microscopy. The Centre for X-ray Tomography (UGCT, UGent) will be providing transnational access during this project.
