Introduction

NUTRIMAN, NUTRIent MANagement and Nutrient Recovery Thematic network, is a EU-funded project under H2020, the EU Research and Innovation Programme. The project objective is to improve the exploitation of the N/P nutrient management/recovery potential for the ready for practice cases not sufficiently known by practitioners. The project brings together 14 partners and 4 associated partners from 8 European countries. The project is coordinated by Terra Humana - Clean Technology Development, Engineering and Manufacturing Ltd. and will run from October 2018 until March 2021.

Project description

Agriculture and food industry have a high dependence on resources in their production and striving for long-term sustainability. The NUTRIMAN is a Nitrogen and Phosphorus Thematic network compiling knowledge ready for practice for such recovered bio-based fertiliser product applications, practices and technologies, interconnecting applied science and industrial practice, for the user interest and benefits of the agricultural practitioners. The project is focusing on the most urgent needs of organic and low input farming specific agricultural production sectors.
Setting up NUTRIMAN network ensures that when this EU law harmonization is reaching legal adaptation status, as estimated by 2018-2020, the agricultural practitioners already know, have tried and are applying such recovered products in practice.
NUTRIMAN will focus on the exploitation of the N/P nutrient management and recovery potential for the ready for practice cases not sufficiently known by practitioners and make integrated coherence in this strategic priority. This will contribute to large scale take up of innovative fertilisers from recovered Nitrogen and Phosphorus produced from un-exploited resources of domestic organic or secondary raw materials in line with the circular economy model.
The aim is to obtain fertilisers which can be used by agricultural practitioners under market competitive conditions, being efficient from an economic point of view, but also sustainable for the environment.
NUTRIMAN will contribute to replace the old ‘linear’ model of technology transfer (from scientists to the users) in agriculture by an interactive model of systems which integrates knowledge production, adaptation, advice and education between the various actors.

Objectives

These are the objectives of NUTRIMAN:
•    To make an inventory of matured FP7/H2020/LIFE/OGs innovative research results in the field of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and nutrient recovery EU28 technologies, methodologies and products which are near to be put into practice, but not sufficiently known by large industrial agricultural practitioners and small-scale famers;
•    Use a bottom-up approach to identify incentives and bottlenecks for adoption ad priorities between technologies/products;
•    Large scale uptake of the recovered N/P innovative fertilisers, produced from un-exploited resources of organic or secondary raw materials in line with the circular economy model;
•    Effective dissemination and exploitation promoted by multilingual web platform, as well as other communications and best practice field demonstrations for farmers.

Role of Ghent University

Ghent University will translate proven scientific research on the replacement of mineral fertilisers by digestate derived biofertilisers to farmers and practically implement this at the farm.
