Description of the project

ENDUREWhen people think of sea defences they think of concrete and heavy engineering. People don’t often think of the natural sea defence provided by coastal dunes. Yet these dune systems are exactly what protect 420 km of the 2 Seas coastline, making it the most extensively dune-protected coast in Europe.

They defend low lying coastal communities, infrastructure and businesses and are often all that stands in the way of climate change impacts e.g. coastal flooding, erosion and sea level rise.

The natural flexibility and constant evolution of dunes provides a natural and sustainable barrier to the sea, dissipating wave energy and soaking away excess water.

Yet they are often squeezed into a narrow band along the coastline, starved of the sand they need to replenish themselves, eroded away by the pressure of too many visitors or fixed into place by invasive species.

Although dunes cross borders, there is no strategy or joint working for resilient dunes. Management and/or monitoring systems are too often ineffective, unsuitable, out dated or not informed by the best cutting edge research available.

Objectives

  • Improve stakeholder capacity to apply sustainable and cost-effective management approaches to the two Seas Region, and
  • Creating more natural resilience to erosion, flooding and sea-level rise.

Role of Ghent University

The TEREC research group will develop new tools to assess the health and resilience of the remaining coastal dunes within the 2 Seas study region.

In order to accomplish this goal, the group is performing research to link the spatial configuration of marram grass with multiple dune functions, aeolian dynamics and above- and belowground food webs.
