Workshops
Two workshops are in English.
- Good communication is the bridge between confusion and clarity (Nat Turner)
How to communicate your research? Ask your questions to Ghent University's press service [ENG] Download presentation
Stephanie Lenoir & Tine Dezeure (UGent)
This workshop is open to non-Dutch speaking colleagues.
- Making a podcast: something for me? [ENG] Download presentation
Sara Logghe (Urgent.fm, @SaraLogghe en @UrgentFM)
Which science-related podcasts are interesting examples of communication for researchers? Sara presents a shortlist of scientific podcasts you should hear and a roadmap to create your own. How to start a podcast? What are common pitfalls? After this workshop you should be able to decide whether you are ready to create your personal research podcast!
This workshop is open to non-Dutch speaking colleagues.
- Science and children? An ideal match! [NL] Download presentation
Céline Van Rijckeghem (UGent)
- Instagram: what's in it for me? [NL] Download presentation
Laurens Beke (UGent, @lausbeke)
-
Journalistic skills of scientists [NL] Download 'bloggers -tips' / Download 'bloggers - artikel schrijven'
Kim Verhaeghe (EOS, @eos_wetenschap)
You don't actually have to wait for a journalist to pick up your research. You simply approach the general public via your own blog. But how on earth do you start a popular science blog? This workshop helps to unleash the journalist in you. You will learn, among other things, how to choose the most attractive angle, how to reinforce your story with self-made photos and videos and how to increase the chance that the media will pick up your research.

- Tournée Minerale? The ideal initiative for a Citizen Science study on alcohol use! [ENG] Download presentation
Christophe Stove (UGent, @christophestove)
Christophe Stove studies alcohol markers; these are products that are formed in the body after a chemical reaction with alcohol and remain detectable longer than alcohol itself. Tournée Minerale offered him the ideal opportunity to investigate how quickly these alcohol markers disappear from the blood of people who normally drink alcohol and choose not to do so for one month. He needed a lot of volunteers for this. Without an initiative such as Tournée Minérale, it was almost impossible to set up such a study, unique in the world. If you participated in the study, you could deduce from your test results whether you are indeed the "social drinker" you think you are ... or rather a problem drinker. In addition, Christophe and his colleagues gathered the necessary data to better detect and follow up alcohol abuse. In the long term they also hope to reduce the enormous social costs of alcohol (both direct, for example through alcohol-related illnesses, and indirect, for example through traffic accidents). Science communication was both a requirement for and a consequence of this study – and will remain so in the (near) future.
All eyes on science communication! [ENG] Download presentation
As a Bachelor student my idea of scientific research involved lonely PhD students wasting away in a corner of a lab. While doing research for my Master’s thesis, however, I discovered this to be awfully incorrect since I was suddenly surrounded by very social and enthusiastic researchers! No wonder, since I realize now that science is incredibly fascinating and, let’s face it, simply amazing! In an enthusiastic attempt to convince others of this, I started off with science communication about my ocular PhD research and participated in Utopia, the Battle of the Scientists and Sound of Science. In this presentation I will talk about my motivation, my experiences so far and (dream) image of science communication in the future; all of this spiced up with some juicy pictures of dissected cow eyes! ;-)
- Pourbus Troubadour: with my bike in the coah [ENG]
Jan Trachet (UGent, @JanTrachet)
In the summer of 2018, I mixed different concepts of research, communication and marketing into a unique way of science communication: Pourbus Troubadour. For one week, I cycled through the Zwin area, using Pieter Pourbus’ 16th-century map of the region as my guide. In the evening, I gave Living Room Lectures for a host who invited family and friends and offered me board and lodging in return. The small-scaled, intimate and interactive setting of a living room on the one hand, and staying over on the other hand, resulted in far greater impact than more conventional presentations for ‘a broad public’. I will use my seven minutes to try to convince you to try the Living Room-concept for your own research.
- Everything you never wanted to do but can't resist: science in the public space [ENG] Download presentation
Ignaas Devisch (UGent, @idevisch)
Scientists should engage themselves in public debates. It is important to get in touch with society and to explain specialist knowledge to a broad audience. Writing opinion articles is one way to do that. Being a particular format, this is something you need to learn. In my presentation, I will discuss some do's and don'ts of writing opinion articles.
- Nathalie Michels (UGent, @MichelsNathalie) Download presentation
Follow my journey through the wonderful world of science communication where all senses are stimulated: see, hear, feel, taste and smell. From a first press release, radio interview, TV show 'Over Eten', Science Slam, University of Flanders, information sessions of all kinds and even a blind date. All this on a bed of nutrition and stress research with carrot-eating stress rabbits and tears with the crisps. Bright points on this path are the support from Ghent University, enthusiastic reactions and new opportunities, but watch out for the slippery banana peel on the way!

- Koen Van den Eeckhout (@Koen_VdE)
Just like at our science cafés, Koen will make a visual report of this inspiration event. Koen is an ex-physicist who is in love with visual communication: as a freelance information designer he creates infographics, builds data visualizations and summarizes fascinating presentations in crazy drawings.
Reception
After the Pecha Kucha's, you can enjoy a nice reception.
