Academic Positions with a focus on research (Odysseus Initiative)

Ghent University (Belgium) announces vacancies for full-time professorial posts in the rank of full professor (hoogleraar) or senior full professor (gewoon hoogleraar),  starting 1 October 2018 at the earliest.

The positions may be granted in any academic field.


These positions are funded by the Special Research Fund and are granted in renewable periods of 5 years until retirement. The new academic staff members will be granted the privilege of focusing primarily on research. The teaching load will be limited to no more than 8 ECTS credits per semester on average over a period of 3 years.



  • You have already conducted excellent academic research, which is clearly reflected in international publications (journals and/or books) with peer review and an obvious international profile;
  • You have acquired extensive experience in supervising research projects and coaching PhD students;
  • You are didactically skilled to teach university students to develop academic competences;
  • Recommended are:
    • Positively evaluated experience in provided or organised academic lecturing;
    • Professionalisation of education.

Admission requirements

  • This professorship is only available for candidates who submitted, via UGent, an application for Odysseus funding (Type 1) to FWO-Flanders by 27 September 2017 and who are granted Odysseus funding Type 1 by FWO-Flanders in spring 2018;
  • You hold a PhD degree with doctoral thesis or a degree recognized as equivalent;
  • You have at least two years of postdoctoral experience on the starting date of the ZAP post. During the last year before the Odysseus application you must have (had) his/her main appointment at an institution abroad, and must have been associated with an institution abroad for at least 3 of the 5 years before this application;
  • You do not yet hold a full-time professorial post at Ghent University at the moment of the awarding of the Odysseus funding.

Appointment information

Depending on the specific profile of the selected candidate, the degree of full professor or senior full professor is awarded. This will be decided by the University Board as proposed by the Faculty Board.

 We offer you a permanent appointment in the starting grade of full professor or senior full professor, without prejudice to the possibility of a temporary appointment offered in article V.28 of the Codex of Higher Education.
