Job description

Ghent University (UG) is one of the major Belgian universities counting over 41,000 students and 9,000 employees. UG is ranked 62st in the International Shanghai and 118th in the Times ranking. Prof. dr. ir. Steven De Meester is head of the Laboratory for Circular Process Engineering ( of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering of UG. This team of around 20 PhD students, 1 post-doc and 2 technicians focus on better chemical engineering in the circular economy, with focus on plastic and organic waste. This vacancy involves a PhD position on a Flemish project with industrial partners related to plastic recycling. The task of the PhD student is to explore different technologies to remove additives from waste plastics during dissolution in a solvent. Afterwards clean polymers can be precipitated that can be used for high-end recycling, including food packaging.

Profile of the candidate

  • You hold a Master’s degree in Bioscience Engineering, Sciences, Industrial Sciences or Civil Engineering with specialization in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or an equivalent degree. The degree requirements need to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment.
  • You are interested in academic and/or project-based research and services in the domain of separation and recycling of polymers
  • You have a good knowledge on polymers chemistry and chemical engineering practices
  • Knowledge on surface chemistry is an advantage
  • You want to apply fundamental knowledge in an industrial context
  • You are creative, open minded and can work independently
  • You are a team player
  • Good knowledge of English is a requirement, knowledge of Dutch is a big plus
