Job description

A 4-year PhD position is open in the frame of the PhairywinD project, an innovative training network in the field of offshore wind grouping Belgian Universities and research centers. The research will be carried out primarily at Department of Control Engineering (SAAS) at ULB (Prof. dr. ir. Michel Kinnaert), in close collaboration with Prof. dr. ir. Frederik De Belie of the Electrical Energy Laboratory of the ESME Department at UGent and Prof. dr. ir. Johan Gyselinck of the Electrical Energy Group of the BEAMS department at ULB. The topic concerns supervision and control of offshore wind farms.

Your work will aim at improving the dispatching of the power demand within a wind farm by accounting for the state of health of the turbine, the wake effects and the fulfillment of ancillary services. You will exploit both existing wind farm simulators as well as industrial SCADA data sets. You will be able to interact with a team of experts and PhD researchers covering all the areas linked to wind energy, from control and supervision to risk assessment, fluid dynamics and structural health monitoring notably.

Profile of the candidate


- You hold a Master degree in Electromechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering or a related area.

- You have an excellent command of English both for oral and written communication.

- You are able to work independently and to formulate/tackle research problems.

- You can start working on the project between March 1, 2020 and June 1, 2020.
