Job description

For the PrOFS (Prevention Of Fraud in Sports) research project, we are looking for multiple PhD researchers. The SBO PrOFS project (funded by FWO – Research Foundation Flanders) starts in October 2020 and will run until September 2024. Led by professor Annick Willem, a consortium of researchers of Ghent University and the University of Leuven will study fraud in sports in all its aspects. Afterwards, specific tools will be developed to prevent fraud in sports in close contact with a large number of leading organizations in the field of sports and beyond. A fair share of the work packages will be executed by PhD researchers. Given the complex, multidisciplinary, and diverse nature of fraud in sports, we are looking for a wide range of distinct research profiles (e.g., legal, criminological, psychological, economic, management). One of the PhD researchers will work on the role of the athlete when it comes to fraud prevention in sports organizations. More precisely, this PhD researcher will mainly conduct research on how moral identity, moral engagement, and dilemma training can help to prevent fraud in sports. The successful candidate will be able to enrol in a fulltime and fully funded PhD position for a maximum of four years (upon yearly positive evaluations) within the Team Sport Management of the Department of Movement and Sports Sciences and the Team Social Psychology of the Department of Developmental, Personality, and Social Psychology of Ghent University.

Profile of the candidate

For this specific position, we are looking for someone with the following characteristics and assets:

  • A completed Master’s degree (MA or MSc) in a relevant field of study (e.g., psychology, educational sciences, moral sciences). Good study results throughout the entire educational trajectory are an asset.
  • A strong interest in scientific research in general and sport- and fraud research in particular.
  • Clear scientific and communicative skills (e.g., critical thinking, scientific writing, presentation skills, project management, methodological skills).
  • A profound knowledge of the Dutch language is a strong asset as regular contacts with organizations in the fields of sports and justice in Flanders will be required.
  • A profound knowledge of the English language is a prerequisite, as the successful candidate will have to present during international conferences and publish in international scientific journals.
  • Strong social skills that enable to work in team (both in the Team Sport Management and in the Team Social Psychology as well in the PrOFS multidisciplinary project consortium), combined with the necessary skills to work independently (yet with guidance and mentoring) on subprojects.
  • Someone who integrates a flexible and creative mindset with strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Someone with a responsible personality, who values ethics, both in social contacts as well in relation to scientific research.
