Job description

Do you want to apply for a multi-disciplinary & innovative project that combines both fundamental as applied science, and contributes to health promotion and disease prevention?

In the framework of the ERC Starting Grant-project HUMYCO (, a PhD-position is available for a highly motivated scientist at the Centre of Excellence in Mycotoxicology & Public Health (FW03) under supervision of dr. Marthe De Boevre. The PhD-research is part of the ERC-project HUMYCO where chronic exposure to multiple mycotoxins is hypothesized to be associated with a higher risk to develop human cancers. The PhD-trajectory comprises the identification of new mycotoxin biomarkers of exposure and effect through in vitro techniques and human intervention trials with focus on both the European and the African population. Based on these study results, the development of human mycotoxicokinetics models is targeted. A final part of the PhD-trajectory consists of the risk evaluation on mycotoxin exposure and human cancer development in both Europe as Africa using cohort-data in collaboration with WHO-IARC (dr. Inge Huybrechts). The ultimate findings of the PhD-study will form the backbone of the ERC-project and the research line on human health.

We are searching for a PhD-researcher, who will reside at Ghent University (Belgium), and will join the ERC-research team of dr. Marthe De Boevre in a challenging and inspiring environment. Besides the PhD-thesis, a subscription to ‘Doctoral Schools’ is obliged: the PhD-student can obtain an extra diploma-supplement by following specialized courses, conferences among others.
