Job description

PhD vacancy: (Hearing-Impaired) Auditory Signal Processing.

The PhD position is part of the ERC project RobSpear: “Robust Speech Encoding in Impaired Hearing” that takes an interdisciplinary approach (combining auditory models with EEG, psychoacoustics and machine-learning) to study speech processing in listeners with impaired hearing. You will be part of an international team of researchers to implement and test signal-processing strategies for hearing aids of the future. Aside from designing behavioral sound perception and/or EEG experiments with normal and hearing-impaired listeners, you are expected to implement and test individualized audio-signal processing methods. The Hearing Technology lab of Prof. Verhulst at WAVES (Dept. of Information Technology) offers an international research environment and access to world-class research facilities (waves.intec.ugent.be/hearing-technology, @HearingTechLab, gasp.ugent.be). Funding is available for 1 year with good perspectives for continued funding up to 4 years (through other funded projects in the lab) after positive intermediate evaluation.

Job profile

Applicants should hold an academic university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Engineering (Electrical, Acoustical, Biomedical) or Engineering Physics. Coding skills (Python, Matlab) and digital signal processing knowledge are required, experience with auditory modeling, sound applications, machine learning are a big plus. Excellent written and oral English skills are required and knowledge of the Dutch language a plus. Experience with writing scientific papers is a plus.

How to apply

Applications should include a CV, motivation letter, copies of higher-education degrees, grade transcripts and the name and contact details of two persons who are willing to give a reference. All documents should be sent electronically (in pdf) to: s.verhulst@ugent.be. Please mention “PhD vacancy hearing” in the subject line. Inquiries about the position can be directed to Prof. Verhulst (s.verhulst@ugent.be). Evaluation of the applications starts Jan 25th 2021 and continues until the position is filled.
