Job description

The Laboratory of Microbiology, Fac. Sciences, Ghent University and Rhizosphere group of the VIB UGent Center of Plant Systems Biology are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate for an FWO funded project “Bacterial root endophytes to protect plants against cold temperatures”.

Starting from the observation that some plants tolerate winter cold quite well, we intend to study the contribution of endophytic bacteria in roots to enhance plant cold tolerance. The project will focus on Arabidopsis, for which cold-sensitive and more resistant ecotypes are available, and Valerianella and Poa which are more cold tolerant. The research will involve amplicon sequencing (16S rRNA genes) and data analysis of microbial communities associated with plant roots. Additionally the student will isolate root endophytesperform genomic characterization of the endophytic bacteria, testthe plant growth promotion and plant colonization and will molecularly analyses selected plant microbe interactions through metatranscriptome analysis.

We offer a PhD scholarship of 1 year extendable to 4 years, given a positive evaluation after the first six months.

Your appointment would start by 1 April 2018 at the earliest.

Profile of the candidate

  • You hold a Master degree in Sciences: Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Biology, or an equivalent degree.
  • You preferably have practical experience in the isolation and characterization of bacteria, plant research and bioinformatics analysis of large data sets or genomes.
  • You have excellent communication skills and have a very good knowledge of written and spoken English.
  • You are highly motivated and combine being a team player with a strong sense of responsibility and initiative.
