Job description

The Particle and Interfacial Technology group (PaInT) is looking for a talented PhD student, who will work on the FWO project “Bringing forward osmosis closer to the market: novel membranes, module design and integrity monitoring”, which will kick off on January 1st, 2019. The project will in general deal with water recovery from polluted sources through membrane filtration, and is a collaboration between Ghent University, KU Leuven and UPC, Barcelona. The focus of this work will be membrane defects: the influence of defects on membrane transport properties; creation, detection and sealing of defects. The consequences of membrane defects on process performance will be investigated from a fundamental perspective.

The PaInT group focuses on physico-chemical water treatment processes, among which membrane filtration. We offer a diverse research group, having both an extended academic and industrial network. PaInT is also embedded in the Capture consortium, focusing on resource recovery from various waste streams (https://capture-resources.be/).

Profile of the candidate

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate willing to obtain a PhD. The research will take place in an academic setting.

  • The PhD student should hold a Master’s degree in (bioscience-)engineering, physics, chemistry or equivalent degree
  • A strong knowledge of and/or interest in surface chemistry, electrokinetic phenomena, polymer chemistry and transport phenomena is required
  • The PhD student should be skilled in applied mathematics and be comfortable with scientific programming
  • Prior knowledge of relevant membrane processes (reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, forward osmosis) is a plus
  • Fluency in English is required, both for oral and written communication

How to apply

Send a copy of your degree, CV and motivation letter to . Please include contact details of your master thesis promoter(s) and former employers (if relevant). Selected candidates will be invited for an interview and a test.
