Job description

The next chapter in Epigenetics: Cracking the “histon code” using mass spectrometry

Description:

The Lab of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Ghent University, Belgium, is looking for a motivated PhD student who is interested in epigenetics and analysis of mass spectrometry data in proteomics. Within a team of 4 PhD students and a postdoc, the student will be working on the development of new mass spectrometry data analysis approaches that can be used for the interpretation of posttranslational modifications on histones. These methodologies can be used to research the dynamics of the histone code in all Eukaryote organisms and are poised to generate new fundamental biological insights in the near future. Currently, fundamental projects are running that investigate the role of histone epigenetics in stem cell differentiation, three-dimensional cell culture and transgenerational epigenetic inheritance of immunology in Arthropods. In parallel, a more applied line of research is the development of a novel epigenetic toxicological assay. The candidate will help unfold new data analysis approaches under the supervision of a more senior bioinformatician and will use the existing ones within collaborations that arise through our MS service lab ProGenTomcics (www.progentomics.be).

Key Responsibilities:

  • • The data will be generated within the lab on the SynaptG2Si and TripleTOF instruments present. The candidate will explore new perspectives on the data to extract additional biological information from it. These new approaches arise dynamically through brain storm sessions and by assessing the specific needs of your colleagues.
  • • Use the existing data analysis pipelines to answer a plethora of biological questions that arise within collaborations (ProGenTomics).
  • • Facilitate and parse data analysis from your colleagues, who are specialized in wet lab, sample prep and handling the instruments.

Profile of the candidate

Qualifications:

A strong background and relevant experience in the areas of bio-informatics, biotechnology and/or Mass Spectrometry are a distinct advantage. A genuine interest in data mining, and bio-informatics are a prerequisite.

  • • Master's degree or the equivalent in Molecular/Cell Biology, Medicine, Pharmacy, Bio-informatics, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, Genetics or equivalent.
  • • Good communication and writing skills in English are a must.
  • • Knowledge of a programming language like python is an advantage.
  • • Affinity with statistics and biology is an advantage
  • • You are communicative, analytical, dynamic and a problem solver.
