Job description

The Laboratory of Experimental Surgery at Ghent University supervised by prof. dr. Wim Ceelen has a PhD position available on postoperative ileus (POI) following abdominal surgery. POI is a transient impairment of gastrointestinal motility which leads to increased morbidity, prolonged hospitalization and increased healthcare cost. In collaboration with UZ Gent, UZ Leuven, UZ Antwerp, AZ Sint-Lucas Gent and ASZ Aalst, a multicenter double-blinded randomized phase II trial will be set up to assess the protective effect of beetroot juice on POI following colorectal surgery. Beetroot juice is a source of inorganic nitrate, which exerts its protective effect after conversion to nitrite in the body.

The PhD candidate will coordinate the clinical trial and is responsible for the translational aspects of the study (e.g. multiplex immunoassays to evaluate the inflammatory response, ozone chemiluminescence to measure nitrate/nitrite levels in blood and tissue,… ). He/she will assist in the scientific processing of an ongoing clinical trial in the context of peritoneal carcinomatosis.

We offer:

→ A fully funded 4-year PhD

→ The opportunity to work in a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic research environment with a strong link to the clinic and a broad range of expertise

→ The opportunity to benefit from the well-established PhD training program of the doctoral school at UGent. The default start date is between October 2019 and December 2019.

Profile of the candidate

→ A strong interest in GCP and performing clinical trials

→ Collaborative, dynamic person who likes to work in a multidisciplinary research environment

→ Motivated to conduct scientific research in the context of a PhD

→ An analytical mind with ability to synthesize and creative thinking → Responsible, accurate, critical and able to work independently

→ Able to communicate fluently in Dutch and English (written and oral)

Candidates will be selected based on excellent study results, motivation, good scientific reasoning and recommendation letters by previous supervisors.

How to apply

Applications including a CV and motivation letter should be sent electronically to prof. dr. Wim Ceelen and dr. Sarah Cosyns (wim.ceelen@ugent.be & sarah.cosyns@ugent.be).
