Job description

Addressing food security issues in the light of the rapid population growth is an increasingly important global challenge. More food will have to be produced in the next 50 years than has been over the past 10,000 years (2008 UN sustainable development forum). One way to achieve this is by managing farm resources site specifically using advanced technologies in precision agriculture. Precision agriculture technologies play an important role in addressing the conflict between producing more whilst operating within a sustainable framework.

A 3-year position as a postdoctoral fellow is available in Precision Soil and Crop Engineering Group (Precision SCoRing), within the Department of Environment, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering in Ghent University (UGent) in Belgium. We are looking for an enthusiastic young engineer to work under a collaboration project funded by the European Commission under the Twinning call for proposals H2020-WIDESPREAD-2020-5 (Nr. 952051), title: SOILdarity: STEPPING UP AND BRINGING OUT THE SCIENTIFIC EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION CAPACITY IN SOIL RESEARCH OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LISBON. The aim of the project is to enable sound collaboration between the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon (CIÊNCIAS) and two leading EU Institutions in soil research and precision agriculture. The ultimate output is boosting CIÊNCIAS research and innovation capacity and improving their know-how in precision agriculture and sustainable soil management through the knowledge-transfer dynamics, established with the internationally leading research-intensive partners.

You will be responsible for running the following tasks assigned for Universiteit Gent for successful completion:

1- Designing a multi-module course on “Combining biofertilizer application with precision agriculture technologies”.

2- Development of a summer school program on precision agriculture.

3- Development of a research excellence training programme on how to write scientific papers.

4- Running other tasks related to SOILdarity project not listed in the above three tasks.

Profile of the candidate

The candidate should fulfil the following requirements:

  • Have or will soon have a PhD degree in Agriculture Engineering, Agronomy, Biosystems Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • Have demonstrable knowledge in the use of basic engineering software and modelling languages, such as, MATLAB Toolbox, LabVIEW, C++…..
  • Have advanced knowledge in precision agriculture research and education.
  • Have acted as an academic staff member of a university with demonstrable teaching experience.
  • Have basic knowledge in sensing, modelling and control technologies.
  • Have a high level of proficiency in English sufficient to communicate effectively with colleagues and write papers and reports.
  • The candidate should be prepared to work in close collaboration with the supervising team, and SOILdarity project partners as well as the MSc and PhD students in the group.
